Recent events from the April 1st update has given us the knowledge of Gwen's future nickname, the Goremonger, in other words a dealer of death. But something about the nickname struck me as odd, and that is the fact that in the future why would the char seek out to kill Gwen? Some explanations that come immediately to mind.

But then why at this time? Why not after the events of Eotn, after the overthrow of the shamans through the efforts of Pyre? We are under the assumption that the char of the future revere pyre and are strong because of his efforts in freeing the char race from the titans' and destroyer influence as false gods.

And why the monicker, Gore Monger? Is her slaughter that legendary that she retains the title? I am under the impression that she mellowed out during her marriage and her hatred of char has been somewhat assuaged between Pyre's influence and her husband.

So I am posing a theory, that maybe Gwen is going to appear in GW2 as a ghost or vengeful spirit. This isn't unprecedented as King Alberden, Murakai and others have indicated that wrathful spirits exist. I am thinking that something in the future, maybe thackeray's death? Maybe this will keep Gwen around in gw2 as a ghast or boss. And it has story line implications too, that despite the conversations with Sarah in the UW, Gwen will not reunite with her mother. It makes for a compelling story that Gwen, the symbol of pre-searing and major hero of the current story will also be in the future, in GW2. I doubt Anet will drop this character, who's been around since Beta, so easily. What do you guys think? Am i reading too much into this?

I think thats it is purely done for the Terminator refreces.

Even though gwen was called "something" by the char in Edge of Destiny, can't really remember what he called her.

Especialy when you think about that the humans and charr will come to some kind of agrement over 200 years.

Also is it just me or did the technology advanced a little bit to mutch in just 50 years?

The Goremonger has been known since Ghosts of Ascalon. She's known as a hero by humans for defending Ebonhawke against siege after siege when the Ebon Vanguard got transfered there in 1080 AE, and a war criminal by the charr for killing hundreds and preventing victory.

Read Ghosts of Ascalon, it explains the origin of the title in more detail.

Everything else about the update was a joke, to our knowledge. But it's not that Gwen was wrathful.

@Ratman: It's 250 years. The truce between humans and charr happens one year before GW2, and GW2 happens exactly 250 years after Nightfall. But that technology was part of the April Fools joke, so was the Terminator-parady quest and the Commando profession.

I feel that the arena personel are from a further future - further than the 250 yrs for gw2.
Gw in a small way reminds me of what things may have been like in uk before the medieval stage but without the spells etc just looks - and if you then compare the timeline to modern day - eg the arena team - we are about 1500 years ahead.
Technology wise gw would be way behind the arena tech and 250 yrs for gw2 still leaves 1250 years to advance.
As an april fools joke i do commend anet - its both a surprise that anet did the commando as a joke and even did a few fun videos to go with it and made a mission - that surpasses what they have done previous years - this is an all new first for anet and i hope next year they release a new commando mission.

The Flame Legion still exists in the time of GW2, and they certainly have no reverence for Pyre, since he was rebelling against their rule. They have good reason to wish that Gwen had never been born at all so that the events of EotN would never happen. My guess is that the Flame Legion is responsible for sending the Annihilator, trying to prevent the rebellion against them by the other legions that Gwen helped facilitate.

You're taking our timeline too literally though. Our 1250 years of advancement involves very little competition in terms of technology (far less so than the pressure that the char and asura are putting on the rest of Tyria) not to mention the darkages, which doesn't look like is happening in Tyria.

Considering the technological level of the char and the asura, I'd Tyria is right on the cusp of the equivalent to our industrial revolution - maybe the early/middle 1800s - where they are still using beasts of burden, still using wagons and all that, but they are also starting to develop powered machinery, they already have self contained rifle cartridges. I think 250 years or so from GW2 is very reasonable for the commandos. The only thing I find implausible about that sort of time line is that they seem to make absolutely no use of magic.

Personally, I've always thought of Guild Wars as being mid-to-late medieval. There are cannons floating around (Siege Turtles, and if you watch the Dzagonur bombards closely they do appear to be mortars, albeit of unconventional design and mounted on floating platforms). Armour technology is also mid-to-late medieval, when you look past the fantasy aspects. There are some cultures that appear to be more primitive, but when you dig deeper this usually turns out to be because they've been pushed below the normal technology line by poverty.

As Operative 14 says, the general GW2 tech base seems to be around the early industrial period - which is about right for a few centuries after GW1. "Modern" technology is possibly closer chronologically to GW2 than GW2 is to GW1 - remember that our own technology had an unprecedented surge starting around the mid-1800s, and the charr appear to already be developing technology around (or beyond) that line. While the asura are on a different scale altogether.
